Modeling Leaves in 3D Studio Max

~ by Charlene Russ, The Artistic Edge

This exercise relies upon a little bit of drawing skill. After customizing the user interface to show tabs, click the shapes tab. Below you will see a variety of shape tools, mouse over these until you see the CV Nurb Curve tool. Click this tool

Drawing the leaf:
Click the perspective viewport in the area you wish to begin drawing your leaf. Drag the mouse downward, click to create a second control point, then slightly drag to bottom right, drag downward and click again. Drag again with the mouse until you visualize a softly waved line in the perspective viewport, drag down, click and continue drawing the other side of the leaf until you reach the starting control point. Right click the starting control point. A pop-up will appear, "Close CV Curve?" Click yes if you are satisfied.

Click modeling tab> extrude from the tabset, which should be a star shaped icon. Right side of screen, set iterations to 0.5, check box beside smooth parameter.

Output> Mesh

Click the modifiers tab, mesh smooth modifier setting iteration to 1.0, Nurms from selection box, smoothness 1.0.

Settings> Input conversion.  The square polygons button should be down, and the keep faces convex box should be checked.

Apply the Twist modifier if desired.
