Question submitted by Jeromeg:

The HP came with an internet keyboard that requires a driver. I want to use another keyboard that is just a plain PS2 board which is a Gateway "Anykey" keyboard which is not software enabled. If I delete the driver for the HP will I be able to switch keyboards? The reason for switching is: it has a set of function keys on the left side which makes it very easy to use short cuts and the keys are bigger and feel better. There is some real doubt in my mind that if I delete the HP I might not end up with a non-functioning keyboard. I bought this HP as a close out and did not get any disks or information period.

Answer from Hal Cardona:

Your new Keyboard will probably just work.  If you wish, you can use msconfig (Start--> Run --> msconfig) to disable the MMKB entry to keep the HP keyboard software from loading.

Question submitted by Ray Carroll:

Using Add/Remove Programs then setup to add components it calls for win cd, but it is never able to find what it is looking for. Tried another Win cd same problem. The files must be on the cd how do I get to them.  Thank You

Answer from Vic Ferri:

Easiest way is to change the Windows source path in the registry to match the location of your Windows 95 files.   Note the drive letter of your cd-rom.  Then go to the registry - click Start>Run and type regedit.  Make your way to this key:  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup. In the right hand pane, look for the value named SourcePath.  Double click it and replace whatever is there with the path to your Windows CD.  For example, if your cd-rom letter is D: you would enter: D:\WIN95\  Save the change by clicking OK, exit the registry.
Now when you go to add components, Windows will automatically go to your cd to look for the necessary files.

Reply from Ray Carroll:

Appreciate the quick response.  Your answer worked like a charm.  Many Thanks

Question submitted by Bruce:

I know this is a long shot, but I have alternative means of figuring out my problem at hand. Basically, I am attempting to display “expired” or “due” in a certain cell in Excel if the date in another cell is 4 or 9 months old. I am unable to find out how to enter this. I tried using formulas, but that only works with numbers, and not dates. This is what the formula should (I think atleast) be: =IF current date is or is after the date in D46, then display “due”.  Would you be able to help me out with my problem?

Answer from Linda Johnson:

Sure, the IF formula will work with dates as well as numbers, as long as the dates are formatted as dates.  Your formula would be
=IF(((TODAY())>=D46),"due","")

Question submitted by Deon from Down Under:

Am using MS Excel 2002 and wish to know if it is possible to freeze both horizontal AND vertical rows at the same time?  e.g.: Freeze top rows A1 - AF2 and also columns A1 - B200 ? Therefore, only the body of the table would move.

Answer from Linda Johnson:

Sure .... the thing that determines what is frozen is which cell you click on before you set up the freeze panes .... click in a cell and go to the Window menu and choose "Freeze panes" and it will freeze whatever is above and to the left of where you clicked. So, in your case, you would click in cell C3, then go to Window>Freeze Panes, now rows 1 and 2 and columns A and B are frozen.

Reply from Deon from Down Under:

Thank you so much once again. Even though I have pretty good computer skills, (A degree in IT with distinctions, having topped the faculty, albeit 14 years ago), I regard you as my personal computer guru. I received a couple of other suggestions thru the XPPro list, all which were cumbersome, having to do with split windows, etc.  Once again, a big thank you from hot, sunny Melbourne.

Question submitted by Ray Carroll:

No sound from speakers, sound from connection on front of CD. No audio cable from cd to sound card, no connection on card.  While using WalMart Connect software sound came speakers.  Got brave & installed drivers., Now no sound on WalMart.  This message appears during win startup. "A Thunderboard/Soundblaster is already installed cannot load a device driver specified in sys.ini.  The performance of windows should not be affected without this file  C:\windows\system VPASD.386  Is possible to uninstall these drivers.Sound card not listed in device manager.  Unable to identify sound card.  Windows PNP can't find card even though I physically removed and replaced the card. I got rid of the DOS message at startup

Answer from Cap'n Patt, (our GeekSpeak Translator):

Have you tried running Belarc Advisor? It will display the info on all your hardware. I.E. on mine it shows: Multimedia None detected Creative Game Port[NL]Creative SB Audigy

Answer from Hal Cardona:

If the Sound Card isn't listed in the Device Manager, you will need to find out what kind it is. To start, look at any invoices that came with your computer or perhaps in the manual, also check your CDs and diskettes for sound card drivers. If you can't identify it from documentation, it is time to open up your computer and look at the card. Look for a manufactures name or an FCC number. You can use the FCC number to identify the manufacturer of the card here: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid.  Once the card is identified download and install the correct drivers.

Reply from Ray Carroll:

The name of the card is Logitech, but this doesn't show in add hardware list. How do I handle this matter?

Answer from Hal Cardona:

Have you tried actually looking at the card? If so is there anything else on the card that can help identify it?  It may be a whole lot easier just to buy a new PCI based sound card for around $20 US. Logitech no longer offers any drivers for their sound cards.

Reply from Ray Carroll:

The FCC # identifies it as Logitech and the name appears on the card. I thought that I might get lucky and find drivers at DriverGuide.com . I agree it would be easier to just buy a new card.  Thanks for all the help and have a nice Thanksgiving.

Question submitted by Faye:

I am the owner of my personal computer. I am attempting to open some of my files that I have not had problems with in the past. Now, I am getting a message from microsoft word 97, "You do not have access to the folder A:\  See your administrator for access to this folder."  What does this mean and how do I correct it? Thank you.

Answer from Hal Cardona:

Are you trying read Word files from a floppy? If so, there are a couple things it could be:

1. The floppy disk is write protected: to remove the write protection, look at the floppy itself, if you see 2 holes then you will need close the slider for one of them. Or you can copy the document to your hard drive prior to opening it.

2. Your floppy drive is failing or has failed. Does it work with other floppy disks? You may have luck with cleaning the drive with a kit, but floppy drives are pretty cheap so I recommend just replacing it.

3. You diskette is failing. Can other computers access the files on the diskette? If not them you may have success by running scan disk on the floppy (from a C:\, scandisk a: /f).

4. Your word document is corrupt.

Reply from Faye:

Thank you for your help. I can open up other floppies in this drive, however, there are three floppies that will not open. All of them give me this message. "You do not have access to the folder A:\. See your administrator for access to this folder."  Your first answer is to remove the write protection. There are 2 holes. How do I close one of them? Thank you.

Answer from Linda Johnson:

There's a little slider on the one hole, just slide it so the hole is closed.  However, write protection *shouldn't* stop you from opening the floppy, it should only stop you from putting anything new on the floppy or changing anything that is there...but it's worth a shot.  Otherwise, I'm afraid it's Hal's fourth suggestion, that the floppy is corrupt.  Unfortunately, floppy disks are very unstable .. that's why most people use either zip disks or writeable CDs now.  good luck.

Question submitted by Julianna Pluff:

I had to change mail program to microsoft outlook due to when I load outlook express the mail comes in and it says how many in inbox but when they come in its not visible. In other words there going somewhere that i can not see. I click on inbox and it says the amount that just came in , but I can not find the new ones anymore. I took it in to a computer place and they couldn't figure it out. They also told me I cant uninstall Outlook express and reinstall. I would really like to have it back I hate microsoft Outlook,  Is there a way to uninstall outlook express and reinstall?

Answer from Hal Cardona:

If your mail is not showing in OE, you have the View command set-up incorrectly. Try this:
Drop down View
Pop out Current View
Select Show all Messages

Reply from Julianna Pluff:

I wish it was that simple I work on computers and already checked that lol. Trust me thats not it either. But thanks if you can think of anything else let me know

Answer from Hal Cardona:

To remove and re-install OE (and IE) under XP follow these instructions from MS:

Question submitted by rip at belwood ont.ca:

after downloading messages cannot access same. I get this message"IMAPP caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.dll at 0187:bff886df", can you help me with this problem. I am an 80 year old "Newbie"who enjoys his computer but it can be hellishly frustrating at times.  Thanking you in advance

Answer from Hal Cardona:

I bet the error message is really about IAMAPP which is part of Norton's Internet Security. The basic solution is force Norton Internet Security to load later in the boot process. Exactly how you do that is dependent on your version of NIS.

Question submitted by Rex:

On Bootup I get an error message "Cannot update ECSD - ERROR"

Answer from Hal Cardona:

ESCD stands for Extended System Configuration Data. It is a function of your BIOS. Some BIOSes have a function to reset the ESCD. Enter yours and see if it does.  If it doesn't go into your BIOS and write down all the settings and then try clearing the CMOS data, when you do this all of your BIOS settings will be lost and need to be re-entered. To clear the CMOS data, look in your motherboard manual, most motherboards can clear the CMOS data by moving a jumper or by shorting 2 solder points. If your manual doesn't discuss the process try removing the CMOS battery (usually a coin sized battery on the motherboard) for at least 20 minutes. A new CMOS battery may also correct the issue.

Question submitted by Stephannee Evans:

My children have managed to save 3 graphics on Word that appear on EVERY new document.....they don't know how they did it, and I can't figure out how to remove them....can you help?

Answer from Linda Johnson:

What's happened is they have saved the pictures on your global template so they appear in every new document you open. All you need to do is search your computer for a file named normal.dot and delete it...make sure Word is closed before you do this...then open up Word and it will create a new normal.dot when it can't find the old one and you will be back to a clean blank document.  If you have any problems doing this (like if you can't find normal.dot or something), read this tutorial on my website and you will be able to do it, I'm sure:
http://personal-computer-tutor.com/NNTWord.htm

Reply from Stephannee Evans:

Thank you so much for your help. The needed normal.dot file was 'hidden' but after a few minutes, I was able to find and delete it and the new documents are blank now. Thank you again! I will definitely be recommending your website to all! I have another question, if I may, How were they able to save the graphics to the global template in the first place?

Answer from Linda Johnson:

Probably saved a file and chose to save it as a template and overwrote your normal.dot.  Glad it's fixed.

Question submitted by Diane:

Hi Linda,  This is probably the goofiest issue I've needed help with, but here it goes. I somehow moved my regular Desktop Toolbar from the bottom of my screen to the top, and I don't know how to bring it back down.  I love your way of cleaning of the desktop, which I have implemented.  http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/cleandesktop.htm Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Answer from Linda Johnson:

Are you saying clicking on it and dragging it to the bottom of the screen doesn't work?  You won't actually see it moving until you let go of your mouse.

Reply from Diane:

I had tried that before, but it didn't seem to work, now that you asked me if I did that, I went back and tried it again, at first nothing happened, and then all of a sudden it moved it to the left side of my screen, then somehow I got it to the right side, and last but not least, I finally got it down to the bottom again.  Thanks Linda, it's great having someone actually email back so quickly.

Thanks to all who submitted questions this month.  If you submitted a question and did not get an answer, and the problem still persists, try going here and submitting it again.  Just remember that we cannot guarantee that we will answer every question, though I think the Fleet did a bang-up job this month!  Thanks to all of the Fleet for your expert advice and your valuable time :-)
