Ten PowerPoint FAQ Entries You Don’t Know
You Need to Read
~~Kathryn
Jacobs, PowerPointAnswers
Many times over the last few years I have
recommended some of the more obvious entries in Steve Rindsberg’s
PowerPoint FAQ. This time, I am going to show you the ten entries that
you probably don’t know you should read.
One Word of Warning: I’ve left the "Programming
PowerPoint" entries and the Mac entries out of this list. If you are
interested in either of those areas, go READ them!
The Myers Multimedia FAQ by Austin Myers (PowerPoint MVP)
The resource for finding solutions to multimedia
problems, Austin knows almost everything there is to know about
PowerPoint and multimedia problems. I even had him write the multimedia
chapter of my book.
Charts with Picture Markers
Use MS Graph a lot? Then check out this cool
little trick to make your graphs more interesting and eye-catching.
Learn to use pictures for your data points and your other fills in two
different ways.
Slide numbering - Slide XX of YY
Okay, I’ll admit it: I really don’t see this as a
useful trick for most presentations. On the other hand, I do know that
when you need this feature, you need it. For example, if you use
PowerPoint to create print documents or documents where someone needs to
know what page you are on, then you need it. This entry contains the
code for a short macro put together by Bill Dilworth, PowerPoint MVP.
Removing a misspelled word once it's been added to the spell check
dictionary
Okay, who hasn’t run into the situation where a
word gets into your dictionary that is wrong? Happens to me. This
little trick shows how to get rid of any word in your custom dictionary,
misspelled or not. Really cool thing about this tip? It works for all
the Office applications, not just PowerPoint.
Distributing PPTs - Pitfalls, Panics & Pleasures
A conglomeration of all the best hints and links
for all the problems you are going to hit when creating distributable
presentations.
Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)
I don’t know why, but this question comes up
everyday on the newsgroup. It isn’t obvious how to do it, but the answer
is easy to find. Just to make sure you know where to find the answer,
check out this entry.
Make animated text appear line by line
Just like the sounds across multiple slides, this
question comes up constantly on the newsgroup. Since the process changed
between PowerPoint 2000 and 2002, both processes are listed here.
Put your PowerPoint-generated HTML on the web
Just one of the HTML related entries in the FAQ,
this entry talks about the mechanics of getting PPT content on your
website. (Oh, and if you need more help on PPT and the Web, check out
the WEBifying section of the FAQ.)
PowerPoint ruler shows inches instead of centimeters. Or vice versa
PowerPoint uses the system settings for
measurements. Since the steps for changing the setting aren’t intuitive
or obvious, check out this FAQ entry for the steps you need.
The entire PPT FAQ in one megbyte gulp
Okay, so this one is a cheat, but I couldn’t
resist. There are hundreds of entries in the FAQ. Picking 10 was so hard
that I felt the best answer was to give you a link to the whole FAQ in a
searchable form.
So, there you have it …10 Entries You Didn’t Know
You Needed to Know!
