What I Install on a New Computer
~~Mike Baynes, MikesWhatsNews

When I have to install the OS and programs on a new or reformatted computer, I have a few programs that I will not be without.

I generally have my AV program and Firewall burned to a CD before starting.

After installing the operating system, I install my firewall, with is Zone Alarm Pro:

My choice of Anti Virus is H&Bev's AntiVir, as it works well and is often updated.

On my most recent new install, I decided to go with Pest Patrol for its Trojan detection and spyware control:

Only after these programs are installed, will I go online to update all the programs.

Then, after a reboot, I will download the rest of my security programs, the
latest versions of:

Ad-aware SE 1.0.5

Spybot - Search & Destroy

SpywareBlaster

SpywareGuard 2.2

StartPage Guard 2.2 mwn #705

After all the security programs are installed and updated, I install my email program which is Courier;

At this point, I do a defrag of my system and empty the temp files, then use Drive Image (Ghost)

to image the hard drives in case I have to reinstall things in the future.

I also have a few non-security-related programs I like to add:

I generally use Text to HTML for fast conversion of text files to HTML
http://www.cyber-matrix.com/txt2html.html

I use Letter Assigner to change the drive letter of the drives on my computers               ;

My CD Rom is P for Play
My CDR burner is W for Write
My DVD burner is V for Video

I have HJ Split to allow me to split up larger files:
