Question submitted by Mary from SF:
Hi. I'm pretty computer illiterate and I have a
question. I have a Pentium II computer I've had since 1998. Can I
increase my RAM and expand my hard drive? And if so how or would it be
better to just spend the money on a new computer?
Answer from
William Warren:
Yes just get a new machine. The money will be
better spent IMO.
Reply from Mary from SF:
Thank you William. (I didn't expect to get such a
fast reply!)
Question submitted by Tony from
Stortford:
My ISP service team are not knowledgeable in FP,
but their virtual server is advertised as supporting FrontPage 2002 (I
assume it is backward compatible for FP 2000). I am new to FP but used
to programme PCs. I 'published' the FP site to my 'gateway' PC and then
use a FTP utility to upload it to the ISP virtual server (Unix based).
I've ensured all filenames are lowercase and no spaces. The upload works
(basic html & graphic files), but it does not seem to 'display' (via IE)
the updated files loaded to the server. There are two current problems:
1) FP Form components do not seem to be 'recognised' (see contact_us.htm)
2) Some of the formating has not been recognised (could be Themes?) (see
index.htm for example)
It seems that FP has its own set of
subdirectories. These are not uploaded to the server. The server has its
own set including the usual 'private'. Do I need to set-up the same
directories on the server for FP to run properly ? NB I have kept all
image and html files in the 'root' directory. Thanks

Johnson:
Hi Tony. If your ISP does support
FrontPage, you need to PUBLISH your site to the internet, not FTP it.
The specific FrontPage files and folders and the things that require FP
extensions (like your contact form) will not work if FTP'd...you have to
PUBLISH them. However, one problem that does occur. If you FTP, then try
to PUBLISH, your FrontPage extensions will almost always become corrupt
and no longer work. So, since you have already FTP'd, publishing now may
not work, but you can try it. If it doesn't work, you will need to tell
your ISP to reinstall your FP extensions, then publish again. Good
luck.
Reply from Tony from Stortford:
Thanks - I'll give it a wirl and let
you know the results.
Question submitted by Colin P from
B'ham - UK
When I set up a multipage document in
word with the Page numbers within a Text Box in the Header this has
previously and correctly printed as set and as displayed. Now when I
print a document (to any of three different printers) the page number
visible change on screen to 1 of 1, 2 of 2, 3 of 3, etc, etc. and also
prints this format. On completion of the Printing process, the on-screen
page number settings revert to the correct format. WHY??

Question submitted by Chris:
Hi there, I can't do a nested function. I get a 0
or false answer. Basically if column A is true, and column B is true,
then sum column C. =IF(C2:C1955="travelling",SUMIF(K2:K1955,"uknown",
D2:D1955)) =IF((AND(C2:C1955="travelling",I2:I1955="uknown")),SUMIF(I2:I1955,"uknown",B2:B1955))
I've tried the above and it isn't working...any
suggestions?
Answer from
Linda
Johnson:
You can't use the traditional IF statement on a
range of numbers like that ....ou have to use an ARRAY entered formula.
Here's my instructions on how to do that:

Question submitted by sekhar:
The OPERATING SYSTEM is not updated since it's
purchase as an assembled set. The I.E,(Internet Explorer), is also not
updated. Due to this many worms (starting from Blaster worm) have
attacked and their removal took a lot of time and money. Now I.E
frequently gets hanged. The Microsoft Web Site informs that updating
with a patch for blaster worm (and numerous other patche-files for
updation/plugging of different "holes" in the OS and I.E) will stop the
infection. can we log onto MS web site and update or can we use the
update menu in the windows (viz. update in I.E WINDOW and MS WORD
window)? I am afraid the keys for the O.S and the I.E (which may be
required for these updations)is not stored in the computer. Neither I
have obtained them from the original owner of the PC. My Question is
raised in the following point No. 2 as stipulated by your Web site (i)
Are the keys Of the OS and the IE referred in the above point required
for updating the OS and IE? (ii) Whether the updating through the
websites may result in any complications as my PC is an assembled one
and I am the II user(complications such as if the OS is not original OS
that came/purchsed with the PC but Subsequently loaded without the
licence?) Because updating on line may result in exposing my PC's OS
without licence. Moreover the option of downloading these updations
through another internet connections on a CD and then transfer of the
Copied uploading files to my PC also may not work as the website
requires to read the details and configurations of my PC and the OS
before updating.

Baynes:
Hi Sekhar, the updates to IE will not be
tied to your OS key number. Microsoft has also said that the Critical
Updates to XP will work an all
versions of XP. However if you attempt to install the XP SP2 service
pack on an infected computer you may have problems. You may wish to run
one of the online free Anti Virus scans.

Question submitted by Thomas:
Thank you for the site, it is very
easy to follow along. I have a question. In Excel, If field2 needs to be
filled with a value from a table. The table (another sheet) has 3
columns, From, To, Rate. I need field2 to go through the table, and if
field 1's value is in the range on the 3rd row, I need the rate on that
row. What function should I use? How do I put this into a formula?
Answer from
Linda
Johnson:
You need to use a VLOOKUP function
... that will do exactly what you want. More info on VLOOKUPs here:

Question submitted by Walt Munza
from Duluth, GA:
I'm trying to make a GEDCOM file copy
of my family tree to a CD. My computer has a CD-Writer Plus drive. When
I create a Copy/Export Family file and save as a GEDCOM (*.GED) to a
re-writeable CD (drag and drop to M drive), I get the following message:
Can Not Open File
M:\The Munza FT.GED
You do not have permission to open this file.
See the owner of the file or an admisistrator to obtain permission.
I e-mailed the Family Tree Maker tech
support and they sent back a reply that it is a Windows issue because
their software does not have any locking features. Can you help?
Answer from
Hal Cardona:
Create the file on your hard drive
temporarily and then copy or move it to the CD.
Question submitted by Joseph
Hayden:
I use Office Professional 2003 SP1
and Windows XP SP2. I used to use Ella as a com add-in, but now I only
have Plaxo. I have been a heavy user of Outlook for years with over
12,000 contacts in my main folder and many custom fields and rules that
I regularly backup with the Save File Settings Tools. Recently I
upgraded from Office Professional XP and noticed that a problem that
rarely happened in XP is now happening constantly in 2003. Namely, every
time I try to view my contacts, I get the following on a big gray frame
of death: "Unable to display the folder. The folder is full." No matter
what view I change it to in "Properties-forms", my contact list will not
be viewable. I can access my contacts by looking them up individually,
but I cannot sort them or cross-reference them as I was able to with my
custom views. When I export it to an excel file I only get the default
fields. I tried uninstalling Office 2003, reinstalling Office XP and I
could see my contacts in most views. During this time I deleted any
extraneous views I don't really use and moved about 800 contacts to
other folders in different PST files as I don't need them as often. I
also removed all email from folders into other PST files just to make
sure the size of the PST file was not interfering. I did a compact of
the PST file through Control Panel | Mail. The current size of the PST
file in question is only 666kb, way down from the 1.6 gig it once was. I
reinstalled Office 2003 and it worked for a few minutes and then started
giving me the same problem when I changed views. I am sure that over the
years I may have tinkered with a basic form or something, but is there a
tool I can use to fix my data? I tried the various knowledge bases and
Google searches and the built-in application repair program with Office
2003 to no avail. HELP!
Answer from Linda
Johnson:
Did you try the Inbox Repair Tool?
It's called scanpst.exe and it's usually in C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\MSMAPI\1033 . It will scan your pst file for errors and
repair them if it can. Or, you could try one of Outlook's command line
switches. If it happens when you switch views, it's possible the
cleanviews switch might fix it (but I would backup your pst file first,
just in case it wipes out more than you want) ... there's also a
cleanpst switch ... maybe you could run that, then copy the stuff in
from your old pst that you need? Here's the info on the Outlook
switches...good luck
http://www.petri.co.il/outlook_2003_command_line_switches.htm
Reply from Joseph Hayden:
Thank you so much Linda. So far the
cleanviews switch worked enough to let me see the standard views. I
still get an error whenever I try to customize the views, but I am
working on that. You were right on the money as usual.

Tilmman:
Is there ANY possible way that
someone can retrieve emails from an AOL or Yahoo account that have been
permanently deleted? And even from a long time ago? And I mean ANY
way...
Answer from
William Warren:
Unless said companies kept a backup
on tape, the answer is no. The only way I know off to get at said
backups is through a court order.
